Mexican Authorities Suspend Dolphin Shows At A Riviera Maya Hotel Following Dolphin’s Tragic Death
Mexico’s Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) has suspended all dolphin shows at the Barceló Maya Grand Resort in Riviera Maya, following the tragic death of a dolphin during a performance in January.
The suspension is part of a broader initiative to inspect all dolphinariums nationwide, signaling a significant shift in the government’s approach to animal welfare within the entertainment sector. The move highlights growing concerns about the treatment of marine animals kept in captivity.
The dolphin’s death sparked worldwide outrage earlier this year, highlighting the cruel conditions dolphins face for entertainment. WAN shared the heartbreaking video on social media, originally posted by UrgentSeas, further drawing attention to this dire issue.
“The unnecessary and tragic death of Mincho the dolphin at Barcelo Hotel is a stark reminder of the cruel reality captive dolphins are forced to endure. No sentient being should have their life and dignity taken away from them. The sooner the Barcelo tank is closed forever, the better,” Phil Demers, co-founder of UrgentSeas, told WAN.
Dolphins are social, intelligent animals that thrive in the wild, where they can form complex social groups, communicate, and engage in natural behaviors like hunting and migrating. In captivity, they are confined to small tanks, leading to stress, depression, and aggression. Captive dolphins are deprived of the freedom to swim long distances, interact naturally with others, and make choices about their lives. The wild offers them the space and environment they need to thrive—captivity simply cannot provide this.
“We support the investigation of this case and call for thorough and transparent inspections of all dolphinariums in the country,” said Eugenia Morales, Wildlife Campaigns Manager at World Animal Protection. “We urge the authorities to develop an action plan based on the findings to gradually close all dolphinariums, improve conditions for captive dolphins to prevent their exploitation, and ban captive breeding. It is time to ensure that this is the last generation of dolphins used for entertainment in Mexico.”
The suspension of the Barcelo Hotel’s dolphin shows is just the beginning of what many people hope will be a broader national movement to close down dolphinariums and move away from the use of dolphins for entertainment in Mexico. Many animal welfare groups, along with concerned members of the public, are calling for lasting reforms to protect dolphins and ensure that these majestic creatures are not subjected to the horrors of captivity.
The practice of keeping cetaceans in captivity must come to an end. These intelligent, social animals suffer in confined spaces, and too many have tragically died. How many more deaths will it take before we recognize that their suffering is unacceptable? The solution is simple: let these creatures live freely in their natural habitats, where they belong. Enough is enough.
You can help by not purchasing a ticket for a dolphin show or marine park, and raising awareness about the cruelty of captivity. Sharing information and signing petitions can also make a difference in advocating for dolphin protection and freedom in the wild.
